Monica Retzke


Monica Retzke, AIA, NOMA, NCARB, LEED ID+C is an Associate Architect at Ayers Saint Gross, where she specializes in designing innovative and inclusive educational spaces. Her work reflects a deep commitment to creating environments that foster learning, collaboration, and community engagement. As a Brazilian-born, first-generation college graduate, Monica brings a unique perspective to her role, driven by her passion for advancing diversity and equity within the architecture profession.

Prior to her tenure at Ayers Saint Gross, Monica honed her skills on a variety of impactful projects, with a focus on integrating sustainable design principles and fostering community connections. Her dedication to mentorship and professional development has been a consistent theme throughout her career.

In 2025, Monica was appointed to the American Institute of Architects' (AIA) Equity Commission, a role in which she advocates for equitable practices and greater inclusion in the field. Additionally, she has stepped into the role of Director of Communications for the DC Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (DC NOMA), where she leverages her platform to amplify underrepresented voices and highlight the contributions of minority architects.

Monica’s academic journey includes advanced studies in environmental management and architecture, which underpin her commitment to sustainable and impactful design. Beyond her professional achievements, she serves as the Lead Mentor for ACE DC at Washington-Liberty High School, inspiring the next generation of architects, engineers, and construction professionals through hands-on guidance and mentorship.

Through her work, Monica strives to create not only spaces but opportunities, shaping a more inclusive and empowered future for the profession of architecture.
