Sarah Bannerman: A Champion of Diversity, Wellness, and Architectural Excellence
DC NOMA proudly spotlights Sarah Bannerman, a LEED Green Associate and Technical Designer at Gensler, whose passion for architecture, sustainability, and community engagement positions her as a dynamic leader. As the current Treasurer of DC NOMA's executive board, Sarah is dedicated not only to her design work but also to fostering diversity and inclusion within the architecture profession.
Academic and Leadership Journey
Sarah began her academic journey at Carnegie Mellon University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture with a minor in psychology (2011-2016). During her time at CMU, Sarah actively engaged in various organizations that shaped her leadership and teamwork skills. Her involvement with Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity, fueled her passion for community service and leadership. Additionally, Sarah’s participation in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) provided valuable insights into promoting diversity within technical fields.
Professional Contributions at Gensler
Since joining Gensler, Sarah has been an integral part of the design team, recognized for her collaborative approach and attention to detail. One of her notable contributions is founding the Gensler Run Club, an initiative that promotes wellness, balance, and community among her colleagues. Sarah’s ability to inspire camaraderie and healthy living reflects her leadership both within and beyond the architectural profession. She is also actively involved in the Design Resilience Committee, where she enhances her knowledge of sustainable practices. Sarah’s recent certification as a Fitwell Ambassador and LEED Green Associate underscores her commitment to sustainability and well-being in design.
Cultural Roots and Personal Influence
Sarah’s Ghanaian heritage deeply influences her approach to architecture, informing her sense of community, diversity, and connection. Growing up in Vermont, she experienced a blend of cultures and environments, which inspired her focus on inclusive design that addresses the needs of diverse communities. In Washington, DC, Sarah is active in her church, where she contributes to the projection team and participates in various community events. She also volunteers with several organizations, including ULI, AIA, DCBIA, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and Kelly Miller Farm, exemplifying her dedication to community service and mentorship.
Leadership at DC NOMA
As Treasurer of DC NOMA, Sarah plays a key role in managing the organization’s financial health while contributing to its mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in architecture. Her position on the executive board allows her to mentor and advocate for underrepresented voices in the field. Sarah is committed to empowering the next generation of architects, particularly those from minority backgrounds, ensuring they have the support and guidance needed to thrive in the industry.
